In a tragic incident on Sunday, suspected Islamist militants killed 40 farmers in the Dumba community of Nigeria’s Borno State, according to a senior state official.
Usman Tar, the state commissioner for information, revealed that the farmers had wandered beyond a military-secured corridor into a dangerous zone known for insurgent activity and scattered with landmines. The militants, believed to be members of Boko Haram and its faction Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have been leading a persistent insurgency in the region.
Insecurity has loomed over Nigeria’s northern regions for a long time, with Borno State frequently witnessing attacks by insurgent groups. Security forces are actively searching for any survivors who may have fled the attack, Tar added, as efforts continue to ensure the safety of local communities.
