The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has announced that Nigerians will now need a National Identification Number (NIN) to access social services, including government palliatives for the poor and vulnerable.

Speaking at the Inter-Ministerial retreat on the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) Project in Lagos, Senator Akume, represented by Prof. Babatunde Bolaji, emphasized the importance of digital identity in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He urged government agencies to support the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in building a strong and inclusive national identity system.

He also commended NIMC’s Director-General, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, for her efforts in driving the Commission’s mandate. As the Chairman of the Project Ecosystem Steering Committee (PESC) for the ID4D Project, he pledged his support for reforms aimed at strengthening NIMC.

Similarly, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, praised NIMC’s leadership and reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to working with the Commission. He stressed that using NIN as a requirement for social services would help ensure that assistance reaches those who truly need it.

Representing the NIMC DG, Ayobami Abiola, Technical Assistant on Policy and Partnerships, thanked the SGF and Minister for their support. She reassured stakeholders of NIMC’s commitment to delivering on its mandate.
