A female passenger aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Abuja is set to face prosecution after causing the cancellation of the flight by holding it hostage, according to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumers’ Protection, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The trouble began when the passenger, after boarding, realized her luggage had not been loaded due to weight restrictions previously communicated to all passengers. Despite signing an indemnity form agreeing to the arrangement, she left the aircraft in anger and demanded that her bags be loaded before the flight could depart.

Efforts by the Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and the flight crew, including an offer by the pilot to accommodate her luggage in the cabin if not for its size, were unsuccessful. As the situation escalated, the flight was unable to depart before Uyo’s airspace closure at sunset, leading to the cancellation of the flight.

The disruption left several passengers stranded, including those with international connections and critical appointments. One passenger reportedly missed a British Airways flight due to the delay.

In a video shared by the NCAA on X (formerly Twitter), frustrated passengers were seen attempting to assault the unruly passenger before she was escorted away by airport security. The NCAA commended AVSEC and Ibom Air personnel for preventing the situation from turning violent.

The NCAA explained that airlines are permitted to short-land baggage during festive periods when passengers often exceed normal luggage allowances. Achimugu emphasized that weight restrictions are standard to ensure flight safety, and passengers had been informed of the arrangement before boarding.

“This disruption created significant operational challenges,” Achimugu said. “The airline had to provide refreshments, transportation, and hotel accommodation for affected passengers, doubling costs for the same flight. This avoidable incident also caused scheduling disruptions that will take days to resolve.”

The NCAA reiterated its stance on unruly behavior at airports, warning that such actions could attract severe penalties, including being classified as terrorism under certain circumstances.

The agency confirmed that the passenger would be prosecuted in line with aviation regulations. “The NCAA continues to educate stakeholders about the consequences of unruly behavior. No provocation justifies violence or interference with flight operations,” Achimugu added.

This incident underscores the importance of adhering to aviation regulations to avoid disruptions that impact passengers and airline operations alike.
