Amazon to Use AI to Reduce Flood Risks in Spain’s Aragon Region

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a €17.2 million investment in artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help mitigate flood risks in Spain’s northeastern region of Aragon, where the company is expanding its data center operations.

The initiative will deploy AI-powered early warning systems to monitor water flow and weather conditions in real-time, allowing local emergency services to respond swiftly to potential flooding. The system will integrate advanced sensor networks and AI-driven analytics to improve flood prediction and disaster response.

In addition to flood monitoring, AWS plans to modernize critical water infrastructure and optimize agricultural water usage in the region, benefiting nearly 700,000 residents in Zaragoza. The move follows severe floods in Spain’s Valencia region four months ago and concerns over the Ebro Rivers frequent flooding in Aragon.

Local authorities in Zaragoza are also constructing additional flood defenses, including protective measures at the Barranco de la Muerte (Death Ravine), an area hit hard by past floods.

Amazon’s investment highlights a broader trend of using AI-driven solutions to tackle climate-related challenges, with a focus on protecting communities and infrastructure from natural disasters.
