NANS Demands Investigation Over Unpaid NYSC Allowance

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to investigate the leadership of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) following reports that corps members have received only N33,000 for their monthly allowance instead of the approved N77,000.

In July 2024, the Federal Government announced an increase in the monthly allowance for NYSC members: from N33,000 to N77,000, with implementation scheduled to begin in February 2025. However, many corps members received only the lower amount during the latest disbursement, sparking widespread discontent among the youth serving the program.

A NANS spokesperson expressed deep concern over the shortfall, stating, “Corps members are essential to our nation’s development and deserve the full benefits promised to them. This discrepancy must be urgently investigated to hold the NYSC leadership accountable.”

Corps members have voiced their frustrations, with several reporting that the reduced allowance has made it increasingly difficult to cover essential expenses such as accommodation, food, and transportation. The situation has intensified calls for transparency and proper management within the NYSC.

Efforts to obtain a response from NYSC officials have so far been unsuccessful, leaving many to question the government’s commitment to implementing the approved increase. With the welfare of thousands of young Nigerians at stake, NANS insists that an investigation is necessary to address the apparent lapse and to ensure that corps members receive the benefits they are entitled to.

As the debate intensifies, stakeholders and youth advocates await further clarification from the Federal Government and NYSC authorities regarding the non-payment of the approved N77,000 allowance.
