GCSE Results to Go Digital for Thousands of Students This Summer

In a major shift from tradition, nearly 100,000 students in England will receive their GCSE results directly on their smartphones this summer through a newly launched mobile app.

The initiative, known as the Education Record app, is part of a government-backed pilot program aimed at modernizing how students access and share their academic records. The pilot will roll out in the Greater Manchester and West Midlands regions, with results expected to be available through the app on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

With this digital approach, students will not only view their results instantly but can also easily share verified information: such as grades, learner numbers, and personal details, with colleges, apprenticeship providers, or potential employers. The system is designed to streamline post-results processes and reduce the paperwork schools typically handle.

Government officials believe the move could save schools and colleges up to £30 million each year by cutting administrative costs.

While the app brings speed and convenience, some students and educators have voiced concerns about losing the traditional in-person experience of receiving results—often considered a milestone moment in a student’s academic journey.

If successful, the pilot could lead to a nationwide rollout, changing how examination results are delivered across England in the years ahead.
