Judge Blocks Deportation of Columbia Student Amid Trump Administration Crackdown on Pro-Palestinian Protests

A federal judge has halted U.S. authorities from detaining or deporting Columbia University student Yunseo Chung, following the Trump administration’s intensified crackdown on pro-Palestinian campus activism.

Chung, a 21-year-old legal permanent resident from South Korea, was arrested after participating in a sit-in protest against the expulsion of student activists supporting Palestinian rights. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revoked her green card, claiming she posed a threat to U.S. foreign policy. In response, Chung filed a lawsuit against the government, challenging what she described as politically motivated immigration enforcement.

U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald ruled in favor of Chung, issuing a temporary restraining order that prevents ICE from taking action against her while legal proceedings continue.
