China Approves World’s Largest Hydropower Dam, Raising Concerns for India and Bangladesh

China has given the green light to construct what will become the world’s largest hydropower dam, initiating an ambitious project on the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. The dam, to be located in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, aims to generate an estimated 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, according to earlier projections by the Power Construction Corp of China.
This mega-dam is set to surpass the scale of the Three Gorges Dam. currently the world’s largest in terms of electricity generation. The Three Gorges project cost a staggering 254.2 billion yuan ($34.83 billion), factoring in engineering costs and the resettlement of 1.4 million displaced residents. While the new Tibetan plateau project is expected to exceed this expenditure, details regarding its impact on local communities and the region’s unique ecosystem remain unclear.
Chinese authorities maintain that hydropower projects in Tibet, which holds more than a third of the country’s hydroelectric potential, are unlikely to significantly disrupt the environment or downstream water supplies. However, critics have raised concerns about the ecological sensitivity of the region, known for its rich biodiversity, as well as the potential displacement of local populations.
India and Bangladesh, both downstream nations, have voiced apprehensions over the dam’s potential to alter the flow and course of the river. The Yarlung Zangbo, known as the Brahmaputra River in India and Jamuna River in Bangladesh, is a critical water source for millions of people in the region. Changes in its flow could impact agriculture, livelihoods, and ecological balance downstream.
As China pushes forward with this monumental project, questions about its environmental and geopolitical implications remain unanswered, underscoring the need for regional dialogue and cooperative water management.
