The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into how social media platforms TikTok, Reddit, and image-sharing website Imgur handle children’s personal data. The move comes amid growing concerns about how tech companies protect young users online. According to the ICO, the investigation will assess whether these platforms comply with the UK’s Children’s Code, which sets strict guidelines on how companies collect, store, and process data from underage users. Focus of the Investigation TikTok: The ICO is examining how the platform processes data for users aged 13 to 17, particularly in its recommendation algorithms and data-sharing practices. Reddit and Imgur: The inquiry is focused on their age-verification measures and whether they sufficiently prevent underage access or data collection. Regulatory Concerns The UK’s Children’s Code, introduced in 2021, requires platforms to provide stronger privacy protections for children by default. The ICO has warned that non-compliant companies could face enforcement actions, including fines. John Edwards, the UK Information Commissioner, emphasized the importance of compliance, stating, “If social media and video-sharing platforms want to benefit from operating in the UK, they must comply with data protection law.” Past Actions and Company Responses TikTok was previously fined £12.7 million by the ICO in 2023 for mishandling children’s data, including processing information from users under 13 without parental consent. Reddit has stated that it is cooperating fully with the ICO’s inquiries. TikTok and Imgur have yet to respond to requests for comment. The ICO has said that if any violations are found, companies will have the opportunity to respond before formal action is taken. This investigation marks another step in the UK’s effort to hold tech companies accountable for safeguarding children’s privacy online.
