Tinubu Upgrades Tai Solarin University of Education to Federal Status

President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the conversion of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, into a federal university. The announcement, made on March 9, 2025, marks a significant development in Nigeria’s education sector.
TASUED, established in 2005 as Nigeria’s first university of education, was originally owned by the Ogun State government. With this upgrade, the institution is expected to receive increased federal funding, improved infrastructure, and expanded academic opportunities. The move aligns with the federal government’s broader goal of strengthening teacher education and enhancing access to quality learning nationwide.
The transition is also expected to attract a wider pool of students and faculty, fostering academic excellence and research development. While details on the full implementation of this change are yet to be disclosed, education stakeholders have welcomed the decision as a step toward improving Nigeria’s higher education system.
This upgrade follows President Tinubu’s recent approval of two other federal universities; the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
