UN Condemns Execution of Children by M23 Rebels in Bukavu

The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the execution of three children by the M23 rebel group in Bukavu, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the UN Human Rights Office, the children were killed after they put on weapons and military uniforms abandoned by the Congolese army. The executions took place shortly after M23 rebels entered the city last week.

UN Human Rights spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, confirmed the incidents, calling them “summary executions.” She also voiced alarm over the escalating violations by the M23 rebels, including the targeting of children.

Shamdasani further raised concerns about the safety of journalists, human rights defenders, and members of civil society organizations, many of whom are reportedly facing threats of reprisals from the M23. The UN has called for immediate action to safeguard these vulnerable groups and ensure accountability for the perpetrators.

This shocking development underscores the continued human rights abuses committed by the M23 group since their resurgence in the region, contributing to an ongoing humanitarian crisis.
