Nokia and Samsung Forge Multi-Year Deal on Video Technology Patents

In a strategic move to bolster its presence in the consumer electronics market, Finland’s Nokia announced today the signing of a multi-year patent license agreement with South Korea’s Samsung Electronics. This agreement grants Samsung access to Nokia’s advanced video technologies for integration into its television products.
Under the terms of the deal, Samsung will provide royalty payments to Nokia, though specific financial details remain confidential. Notably, this arrangement operates independently of the existing 5G patent license agreement between the two tech giants.
This collaboration underscores Nokia’s commitment to innovation and its influential role in the development of video technology standards. The Finnish company has a storied history of contributing to multimedia and video research, with its engineers’ work earning international recognition, including multiple Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards.
Nokia’s extensive patent portfolio is the result of over €129 billion invested in research and development over the past two decades, encompassing around 20,000 patent families, with more than 3,500 declared essential to 5G. By licensing its technologies, Nokia enables companies like Samsung to incorporate cutting-edge innovations into their products without the necessity of substantial R&D investments.
This agreement not only strengthens the partnership between Nokia and Samsung but also highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing technology and enhancing consumer experiences in the rapidly evolving electronics industry.
