Pope Francis Passes Away at 88 After Final Easter Appearance

Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide, has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his passing on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, just one day after he made a hopeful appearance at Saint Peter’s Square for the Easter Sunday celebration.

The Pope, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, made history in 2013 as the first Latin American and Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church. Throughout his 12-year papacy, he became known for his humility, bold social messages, and strong advocacy for the poor, the environment, and social justice.

Despite recent health challenges, including treatment for pneumonia, Pope Francis remained active in his duties, offering his final blessing to the faithful on Easter Sunday.

His death has drawn tributes from around the globe, with world leaders and religious communities mourning the loss of a leader widely seen as a reformer and symbol of compassion.

The Vatican will soon begin preparations for a conclave to elect the next pope, a process expected to take place within the next two to three weeks.
