Canada Mulls Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods in Response to Trump’s Threat

Amid President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, Canada is considering a range of retaliatory measures, including potential tariffs on U.S. products like orange juice, The Globe and Mail reports.
Orange juice, a major export from Florida,Trump’s home state, could be one of the first products targeted if these tariffs are enforced. Other U.S. goods under consideration for retaliation include ceramic items, steel products, glassware, and various plastic goods. However, the list of potential targets is still being evaluated and has not been finalized, according to a government source.
This move comes after Trump’s promise in November to enact significant tariffs on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico unless both countries take immediate steps to address issues related to migration and the illicit drug fentanyl crossing their borders. In response, Canada’s federal and provincial governments have been ramping up border security measures in anticipation of the tariffs.
The Canadian Ministry of Finance has not yet commented on the situation, but it is clear that Canada is preparing to safeguard its economic interests as the trade conflict heats up.
As tensions between the two neighboring countries continue to rise, all eyes are on how Canada will respond and whether diplomatic solutions will avert further escalation.
