Nigeria’s Finance Minister Confirms Periodic Review of Telecom Tariffs

Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has announced that telecommunications tariffs will be reviewed periodically to ensure they remain balanced and fair for both consumers and service providers.
Speaking at the ongoing 2025 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Edun addressed the recent 50% tariff increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for telecom operators. The move has sparked controversy, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) criticizing the government for what they called an “assault” on workers’ welfare, even threatening a nationwide boycott of telecom services.
Edun defended the adjustment, explaining that it was necessary to sustain the telecom sector amidst rising operational costs and inflation. He assured that future tariff reviews would be based on consultations and discussions, ensuring that the sector remains both fair to consumers and viable for operators.
“The 50% tariff hike is just the beginning,” he stated. “It’s about balancing inflation, cost of living, and the operational needs of telecom companies. We aim for efficient services, seamless call terminations, and high-quality delivery while promoting innovation and job creation.”
He emphasized that the government is committed to fostering a telecom sector that drives economic growth, innovation, and attracts investments, ultimately supporting Nigeria’s broader economic goals.
