NCDC Reports Spike in Lassa Fever Cases Across Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a significant rise in Lassa fever cases between January and March this year. According to the agency, a total of 3,465 suspected cases have been recorded across 91 local government areas in 33 states.

This surge marks a notable increase compared to previous periods. Last year, during a similar timeframe, the number of suspected cases was considerably lower, prompting heightened concerns among public health officials about the evolving outbreak.

In response to the escalation, the NCDC has intensified its efforts to curb the spread of the disease. The agency is actively training healthcare workers, bolstering surveillance systems, and ensuring that essential response commodities, including personal protective equipment and necessary medications are distributed to affected regions.

Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic illness transmitted primarily through contact with food or household items contaminated by rodent excreta, poses a significant public health risk. As such, the NCDC is also emphasizing the importance of community sensitization and risk communication. Officials urge residents, particularly in hotspot areas, to adopt preventive measures to minimize exposure and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms arise.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and further updates will be provided as the outbreak evolves.
