Teenage Pregnancy Still Leading Cause of Death Among Girls Aged 15–19 — WHO Warns

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reaffirmed that pregnancy and childbirth complications remain the leading cause of death among girls aged 15 to 19 globally. These include severe bleeding, infections, hypertensive disorders, and unsafe abortions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

In Nigeria, the concern is growing. Recent data from the 2023–24 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey shows that 1 in 7 girls in this age group has experienced pregnancy, with the highest rates recorded in rural communities across the North West and North East regions.

Health experts and child rights advocates say the statistics call for urgent action. Key recommendations include expanding access to sexual and reproductive health services, improving health education, and addressing cultural norms that contribute to early childbearing.

“Teenage girls need support, not silence,” one advocate noted. “The earlier we act, the more lives we save.”

Stakeholders are urging government and civil society organizations to scale up interventions aimed at empowering young girls through education, access to accurate health information, and community awareness campaigns.
