Tragedy in Oyo: 14-Year-Old Student Killed by Stray Bullet on Exam Day

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, May 20, when a 14-year-old student, Kehinde Alade, was fatally shot by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer.

Kehinde, who was on his way to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), was accompanied by his twin brother and father. The incident happened in the Gbagi area of Egbeda Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that Kehinde’s father, Odunayo Alade, was driving against traffic when law enforcement agents — including officers from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) and police personnel — flagged down the vehicle. Allegedly attempting to evade arrest, the driver hit two OYRTMA vehicles and a police patrol van.

In a bid to stop the car, a police officer fired at the tires, but the bullet tragically struck Kehinde, who was seated in the back seat. He was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

The devastating news sparked outrage in the community. Protesters, led by Kehinde’s grieving father, carried the boy’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat, demanding justice and accountability from the authorities.

In response, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident, disclosing that the officer involved has been arrested. A full investigation is underway, led by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The Oyo State Government has described the shooting as deeply painful and assured the public that justice will be served. The House of Assembly also condemned the killing and called for psychological support and compensation for the family, alongside a campaign to educate both citizens and security personnel on lawful conduct.

This tragic loss has reignited concerns over the misuse of firearms and underscores the urgent need for reforms in law enforcement practices across Nigeria.
