BioNTech has reached settlement agreements with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) to resolve royalty payment disputes tied to its COVID-19 vaccine.

The German biotechnology company, in partnership with Pfizer, announced it will pay $791.5 million to the NIH following a default notice and $467 million to Penn to settle allegations of underpaid royalties. As part of the agreement, Penn will dismiss its lawsuit against the company.

Pfizer is set to reimburse BioNTech for a portion of the payments, covering up to $170 million for Penn royalties and $364.5 million for royalties owed to the NIH from vaccine sales between 2020 and 2023. These settlements mark an important resolution for BioNTech and its role in global vaccine development.
