Firefighters in Victoria, Australia, are battling at least six major wildfires as a record-breaking heatwave sweeps across the south-east of the country. Two of the fires are classified as “emergency level,” prompting authorities to issue alerts for residents to evacuate, stay on alert, or shelter in place. Fire officials have warned that conditions are changing rapidly and urged people to follow the latest updates. The Bureau of Meteorology reports that some areas of Victoria have recorded all-time high temperatures, with one location reaching 48.9°C and Melbourne hitting 41°C. Chris Hardman, chief fire officer at Forest Fire Management Victoria, said the extreme heat is making firefighting efforts “incredibly difficult.” The fires in Camperdown and the Otways are currently at emergency level, while a new blaze in Larralea is raising serious concerns. Jason Hefferman, chief officer of the Country Fire Authority (CFA), warned that the Otways fire could generate ember showers capable of starting additional fires ahead of the main blaze. The extent of damage is not fully known, but Alistair Drayton, Deputy Incident Controller, said there is anecdotal evidence that some homes have been destroyed. He also praised firefighters for their “spectacular” efforts so far. Victoria remains under a total fire ban, and South Australia has also been placed on high alert for extreme fire risk. Health authorities have cautioned that the intense heat poses serious risks, especially for the elderly, children, and people with pre-existing health conditions. Victoria’s chief health officer, Caroline McElnay, warned that the heat can cause life-threatening conditions such as heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and can also trigger heart attacks or strokes.

An outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus in West Bengal, India, has raised alarm across parts of Asia, prompting enhanced screening measures at airports. Thailand has begun screening passengers at three airports in Bangkok and Phuket that receive flights from West Bengal. Nepal has also started screening arrivals at Kathmandu airport and other land border crossings with India. In West Bengal, five healthcare workers were infected earlier this month, with one reported in critical condition. Around 110 individuals who had contact with them have been placed under quarantine. The Nipah virus can be transmitted from animals, such as pigs and fruit bats, to humans, and can also spread through contaminated food or from person to person. It has a high fatality rate, estimated between 40% and 75%, and there is currently no vaccine or approved treatment. Symptoms of Nipah infection vary, with some people showing no signs at all. Early symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat. In severe cases, patients may develop drowsiness, altered consciousness, pneumonia, or encephalitis, a potentially fatal inflammation of the brain. The incubation period ranges from four to 14 days. Past outbreaks have occurred in Malaysia, Bangladesh, and India. The first recognized outbreak was in 1998 among pig farmers in Malaysia, resulting in over 100 deaths and the culling of a million pigs. Bangladesh has reported over 100 deaths since 2001. India has seen outbreaks in West Bengal in 2001 and 2007, and in Kerala in 2018 and 2023, with high mortality rates. Currently, at least five confirmed cases have been reported in Barasat, linked to a private hospital. Two nurses are in intensive care, with one in critical condition. While no cases have been confirmed outside India, countries in the region are taking precautions. Thailand is requiring health declarations from travelers from West Bengal and has increased screening at tourist sites. Nepal has intensified monitoring at its airport and land borders with India. Taiwan is considering classifying Nipah as a “Category 5 disease,” reserved for rare or emerging infections with serious public health risks that require immediate reporting and control measures.

A senior US immigration official is set to leave Minneapolis, signaling a possible shift in the White House’s approach following the fatal shooting of a second resident by federal officers over the weekend. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino and several immigration agents are departing, while former “border tsar” Tom Homan will take over on-the-ground operations in the city after the shooting of Alex Pretti on Saturday heightened tensions. The move may indicate the administration’s intent to scale back aggressive federal actions amid mounting criticism. Despite the change in personnel, online monitoring shows immigration raids in Minneapolis have continued. Bovino, who led the operation when Pretti—a bystander reportedly filming agents—was shot multiple times, previously claimed Pretti intended to “massacre” federal officers. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated agents fired in self-defence after Pretti allegedly resisted disarmament while holding a handgun. Witnesses, local officials, and Pretti’s family have disputed this account, saying he held only a phone. Pretti’s parents have criticised the administration for spreading “sickening lies” about the incident. Bovino has been a prominent figure in the Trump administration’s hardline immigration enforcement, regularly documenting and promoting raids. Homan, who reports directly to the president, is also a strong advocate of strict immigration measures and previously worked on immigration and deportations during the Obama administration. Tensions in Minneapolis remain high. George Cordero, a resident of St. Paul, said, “A lot of people aren’t able to work right now, they aren’t able to leave their house, they’re afraid.” Pretti is the second Minneapolis resident shot and killed by federal immigration agents since their arrival; Renee Nicole Good was killed by ICE on January 7. While some reports suggested Bovino had been removed, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin denied this, calling him “a key part of the president’s team.” Public anger has largely focused on Bovino and the thousands of federal agents—including ICE personnel—deployed to the city. Pretti’s sister, Micayla, described her brother as “my hero” and questioned how many more lives must be lost before action is taken. Local residents, including retired nurse Carol Engelheart, expressed fear and called for civic action to protect constitutional rights. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said it is the president’s “hope and wish” that the chaos in Minneapolis ends. Trump also spoke with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both of whom have opposed the federal immigration operations. The discussions were described as constructive, with Trump and Walz agreeing to explore reducing the number of federal agents in the state while allowing the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to conduct an independent investigation into Pretti’s death. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham praised Homan’s deployment as “a very smart move,” while Senator John Curtis called for a “transparent, independent investigation” to hold those responsible accountable. Memorials for Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, and protests against ICE operations have continued, including a demonstration outside the hotel where Bovino was reportedly staying. Additional vigils and protests are planned in the coming days.

The European Union and India have announced a landmark trade agreement after nearly two decades of intermittent talks, aiming to strengthen economic ties amid global trade tensions. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described it as “the mother of all deals” after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, who called the agreement “historic.” The deal will allow free trade of goods between the EU’s 27 member states and India, together representing nearly 25% of global GDP and a market of around two billion people. The agreement is expected to significantly reduce tariffs and increase market access for both sides. Von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, who are in Delhi for a bilateral summit with Modi, said the deal will eliminate tariffs on most exports of chemicals, machinery, electrical equipment, aircraft, and spacecraft through phased reductions. Duties on motor vehicles, currently up to 110%, will be reduced to 10% under a quota of 250,000 vehicles. The pact will lower costs for European products entering India, including cars, machinery, and agricultural food items, while sensitive agricultural sectors such as dairy and sugar remain excluded. It is also expected to boost investment flows, improve access to European markets, and deepen supply-chain integration. “This is a historic agreement,” Modi said, adding that it will make access to European markets easier for Indian farmers and small businesses, while supporting growth in manufacturing, services, and innovation partnerships. The deal comes as both India and the EU navigate economic and geopolitical pressures globally. Von der Leyen highlighted that the free trade zone of two billion people will benefit both sides and strengthen their strategic partnership. Costa added that the agreement sends a clear message that India and the EU prefer trade cooperation over protectionist measures. Von der Leyen and Costa attended India’s Republic Day celebrations over the weekend and met Modi in Delhi, where the leaders’ cordial relations were evident. The formal signing is expected later this year after approval by the European Parliament and European Council. In addition to trade, India and the EU are advancing talks on security, defence cooperation, and climate action. India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas to discuss joint opportunities in defence supply chains, cybersecurity, maritime security, and developing future-ready capabilities. Modi noted that the partnership represents 25% of global GDP and one-third of global trade. The EU is India’s largest trading partner in goods, with bilateral trade reaching $136 billion in 2024-25, nearly doubling over the past decade. Negotiations for the trade deal began in 2007 but stalled in 2013 over market access and regulatory issues, resuming formally in July 2022. Key sticking points included India’s automobile and agricultural markets and carbon-linked tariffs, which analysts will examine closely in the final agreement. The deal also comes as both India and the EU seek alternative markets for exporters, following recent trade agreements India signed with the UK, Oman, and New Zealand, and the EU’s recent deal with South American trade bloc Mercosur after 25 years of negotiation.

Residents of Gidan Waya in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State have accused bandits of refusing to release 13 villagers abducted despite the payment of a ₦40 million ransom, leaving the community in hunger and despair. The Chairman of the Gidan Waya Elders Forum, Mallam Rabo Sambo, made the disclosure on Monday during a press conference in Kaduna. Sambo said the villagers were kidnapped during a violent night raid on November 11, 2025, when armed men attacked the community between 11 p.m. and midnight, firing gunshots and throwing residents into panic. “We heard gunshots, and before we knew it, the bandits had surrounded the settlement,” Sambo said. “Our community is a closed settlement, so they easily ambushed us.” He added that four residents were killed and five others were injured and taken to medical facilities for treatment. Thirteen villagers—five men and eight women—were taken to an unknown location, he said. “This is the first time we are experiencing such an attack. We have always lived in peace here, and there has never been any crisis among us,” Sambo noted, adding that the attackers wore masks, making identification impossible. The kidnappers later contacted the community in January 2026, demanding a ransom of ₦40 million for the release of the abducted villagers. “To raise the ransom, we sold over 3,000 bags of maize. When the trailers came to load the maize, everyone in the community was crying,” Sambo said, explaining that the maize was the community’s main food reserve meant to sustain families for months. “After selling our food to pay the ransom, we are now going hungry. We can no longer feed our families,” he added. Sambo said the ransom was delivered immediately, with the expectation that the villagers would be released without delay. “As soon as we got the money, it was taken straight to the kidnappers,” he said. However, he lamented that weeks after the payment, none of the abductees had been freed. “It has been more than two months since they were taken. Even today, none of them has returned,” he said, explaining that the elders went public because they were unsure whether the Kaduna State Government or the Lere Local Government Council had been fully informed. “We don’t know if Governor Uba Sani is aware of what happened to us. That is why we are appealing through the media,” Sambo said. While acknowledging the efforts of the Divisional Police Officer in Lere, who has visited the community several times, Sambo appealed to state and federal authorities for urgent intervention to secure the release of the abductees and provide food assistance. “Our people are still in captivity, and those at home are suffering. Everyone shed tears. We are living in fear, hunger, and uncertainty,” he said. His revelation comes shortly after over 160 worshippers were abducted in a separate incident in Kaduna.

The Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders Forum has announced that it has raised N200 million to purchase the All Progressives Congress presidential nomination form for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election. The disclosure was made on Monday during a high-level youth leadership and stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where the group also formally endorsed Tinubu for a second term. The endorsement, the forum said, was based on the need for policy continuity, consolidation of ongoing reforms, and sustained national development. At the meeting, leaders of the forum presented the N200m cheque to the Director-General of the Tinubu Support Groups, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai. A communiqué issued after the meeting and signed by the forum’s National Leader, Murtala Gamji, and Director of Operations, Agbana John, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to peaceful, issue-based youth mobilisation across Northern Nigeria, with emphasis on democratic participation, national unity, and responsible civic engagement. According to the communiqué, the gathering was convened to review national progress under the Renewed Hope Agenda, strengthen youth involvement in governance, formally endorse President Tinubu for a second term, and launch the Renewed Hope Ambassadors initiative. The forum resolved to promote structured youth inclusion through sustained advocacy for youth representation in policy discussions, governance processes, and development programmes at the federal, state, and local levels. It also agreed to institutionalise the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Platform as a strategic network for policy advocacy, grassroots awareness, leadership development, and community engagement. In addition, the group pledged to deepen partnerships with government institutions, development partners, traditional and community leaders, and the private sector to advance youth-focused initiatives in leadership, entrepreneurship, civic education, and social stability. The communiqué further emphasised a commitment to peace and responsible political conduct, rejecting violence, misinformation, and divisive narratives. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Gamji said President Tinubu’s performance warranted a second term. He stated that, with the backing of the forum’s board of trustees, grand patrons, and the leadership of the Tinubu Support Groups, the organisation decided to support the President with N200m toward the purchase of the APC nomination form when it becomes available. Gamji added that the forum believes in national unity and in the understanding that Southern Nigeria should complete its eight-year tenure before power returns to the North. He noted that youths across religious and ethnic lines in the 19 northern states are united in their support for the President, citing his efforts in the areas of security, agriculture, and infrastructure.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered Airtel Networks Limited to pay N210m in damages for the unauthorised use of a musical work titled “Nigeria Go Survive.” Delivering judgment on Monday in suit no. FHC/L/CS/1822/2022, Justice Ibrahim Kala ruled in favour of the song’s producer, Veno Marioghae Mbanefo, holding that Airtel’s use of the work without licence or authorisation constituted copyright infringement. The judge declared that Airtel’s use of the song, or any substantial part of it, for advertising, promotional, and telemarketing purposes to its subscribers without the consent of the copyright owner amounted to a breach of Mbanefo’s rights. Justice Kala awarded N200m as general damages for the infringement and an additional N10m as cost of action, bringing the total sum to N210m. In addition to the monetary award, the court granted both mandatory and perpetual injunctions against the telecommunications company. The judge ordered Airtel, its agents, and affiliates to immediately stop reproducing or using the musical work for advertising, business, telemarketing, or promotional activities. The company was also permanently restrained from any future unauthorised use of the song. Mbanefo, through her legal team led by Clement Onwvenwunor (SAN), had asked the court to declare that Airtel’s use of the song without her consent or proper credit violated her rights under the Copyright Act. She also sought damages and, in the alternative, an order directing Airtel to account for profits allegedly earned from the infringement under the supervision of the Nigerian Communications Commission. Airtel, represented by a legal team led by Babatunde Amoo, had urged the court to dismiss the suit. However, Justice Kala, after evaluating the evidence and arguments presented, held that the plaintiff had successfully proved her case on the balance of probability. While the court declined the request for an account of profits, it upheld Mbanefo’s claims on copyright infringement, damages, and injunctive relief.

The All Progressives Congress has rejected claims that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the reports as false and misleading. In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima remain united and fully committed to driving the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Morka said the party had observed increasing media speculation about the possibility of replacing Vice President Shettima ahead of the 2027 polls, noting that the rumours recently escalated with the mention of specific individuals as potential replacements. He stated categorically that such reports are entirely speculative, untrue, and without any factual basis, stressing that the President and Vice President continue to work closely in implementing reforms aimed at economic transformation, shared prosperity, and improved living standards for Nigerians. Morka also urged media organisations to refrain from promoting rumours and unverified claims designed to create confusion and discord in the political environment. He noted that existing laws and electoral regulations still prohibit political activities at this time, adding that the party remains focused on supporting the Tinubu–Shettima administration in delivering on its agenda and consolidating reforms already impacting the economy and citizens’ welfare. The ruling party further cautioned party leaders and government officials against encouraging unnecessary speculation. It called on ministers, senior government officials, and party leaders to remain focused on their core responsibilities of service to the government and the party, and to contribute to the continued success of President Tinubu’s leadership and the administration’s objectives.

The Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to step up efforts to address the country’s worsening security situation following the abduction of more than 160 worshippers in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State on January 18. The call was made by the church’s Supreme Head, Emmanuel Alogbo, on Monday during a world press conference held ahead of the church’s 2026 Annual General Conference at Seraphim Land in Ogun State. Alogbo described the incident as a painful national tragedy and appealed to the government to further equip the Armed Forces with modern tools and resources to enhance their effectiveness. He said the church was deeply concerned about the loss of innocent lives, the displacement of families, and the growing fear in many communities across the country. According to him, 151 members of the church remain in captivity after being kidnapped during a Sunday service on January 18, 2026, at Wali in Kajuru LGA. While acknowledging the efforts of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration in tackling insecurity, he noted that the recent surge in kidnappings requires urgent and decisive action. Alogbo added that the church is working with its state chapters to relocate worship centres from remote and high-risk areas to safer locations. He also said the church is using its platform within the Christian Association of Nigeria to push for stronger security measures nationwide. The church’s forthcoming Annual General Conference, themed “An Unhidden City” (Matthew 5:14), is scheduled to hold from January 29 to February 1 at Saviour’s Ministries (C&S), Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State. The event aims to provide spiritual guidance and practical direction during a challenging period, with activities including plenary teaching sessions, leadership and ministers’ forums, youth and women empowerment programmes, prayers and intercessions, and strategic discussions on the church’s future beyond its centenary. Meanwhile, tension remains high in Kurmin Wali village in Kajuru LGA, where worshippers from three churches were abducted. Out of the 177 people initially taken, 11 later escaped, leaving 166 still in captivity more than a week after the attack. The victims include children as young as five, women, and elderly men. Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria described the condition of the captives as distressing and life-threatening, noting that they are reportedly being forced to sleep outdoors in cold and harsh conditions without sufficient food or medical care. Its CEO, Rev. Yunusa Nmadu, said the prolonged captivity has worsened the trauma experienced by victims’ families and weakened public confidence, especially after initial reports of the abduction were denied before being confirmed. Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has since visited Kurmin Wali, where he met with community leaders and families of the abducted worshippers. The state government was commended for providing medical support to those who escaped, repairing access roads to the village, and deploying security personnel to maintain calm. However, Nmadu stressed that these steps are insufficient without the immediate rescue of those still held captive, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to secure their release and restore public trust. Residents of Kurmin Wali continue to live in fear and uncertainty, holding on to hope for the safe return of their loved ones as the days in captivity continue.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement (North West), Alhaji Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, has reiterated the President’s commitment to delivering extensive infrastructural development across the country, with particular focus on the North-West region. Yakasai made the statement in Gusau on Tuesday while leading members of the National Media Tour on an inspection of the ongoing Zaria–Gusau–Sokoto dual carriageway project awarded by the Federal Government. He praised President Tinubu for initiating and driving the project in the North-West, noting that once completed, it would significantly enhance commercial activities, improve security, and promote social development in the region. According to Yakasai, the Federal Government is determined to ensure the project is completed on schedule, adding that durable materials and substantial investment consistent with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for infrastructure have been committed to the project. He also commended the contractors for their efforts and urged them to strictly adhere to contractual terms while delivering quality work within the agreed timeframe. Yakasai stressed that President Tinubu deserves the continued support of the people of the North-West, citing the execution of long-lasting legacy projects as evidence of his administration’s commitment to the region. In his remarks, the Controller of the Federal Ministry of Works in Zamfara State, Engr. Kasimu Yusuf, described the inspection visit as timely and encouraging. He explained that the contract for the dualisation of the 372-kilometre Zaria–Gusau–Sokoto highway was awarded in 2023 with a completion period of 48 months. Yusuf outlined that the project was divided into four sections: Section One runs from Zaria in Kaduna State to Sheme in Katsina State; Section Two spans Sheme to Gusau in Zamfara State; Section Three covers Gusau to Talata Mafara in Zamfara State; while Section Four stretches from Talata Mafara to Sokoto. He disclosed that the 86.1-kilometre Section Two has reached 52 per cent completion, while the 93.7-kilometre Section Three has achieved 14 per cent completion. Yusuf added that contractors on the project are delivering quality work and complying with the terms of the contract set by the Federal Government.
