Senate Proposes N10 Billion for Investor Education in 2025 Budget

The Nigerian Senate has proposed a N10 billion special fund for investor education in the capital market as part of the 2025 budget. The initiative aims to raise awareness and attract more Nigerians to invest in the market.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market, Senator Osita Izunaso, made this announcement during the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s budget defense session in Abuja on Tuesday.
Speaking to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, Izunaso emphasized the crucial role of the capital market in achieving President Bola Tinubu’s vision of a $1 trillion economy. He stressed the need to increase participation in the market, which remains low despite its potential.
“The capital market is performing well, but we need to do better to attract more investors. Currently, participation is low, and the number of companies listed on the exchange is small compared to the total businesses operating in the country,” Izunaso stated.
He further explained that dedicated funding is required to improve financial literacy and boost investor confidence.
“We will formally request a N10 billion allocation in the 2025 budget for capital market literacy. This will enhance investor education and help our capital market grow,” he added.
In response, Finance Minister Wale Edun highlighted the government’s efforts to create a stable and conducive environment for investment. He noted that key economic reforms introduced by President Tinubu are aimed at accelerating growth and lifting millions out of poverty.
Edun also pointed out that the Nigerian stock market has started the year on a positive note, reflecting investor confidence and resilience.
“There are ways the government can encourage greater participation and savings through the stock market. Nigeria has a substantial savings pool, including pension funds contributed by salary earners and civil servants, which can be channeled into investments,” he said.
The proposal for the N10 billion investor education fund is expected to be formally included in the 2025 national budget.
