South Korea in Shock as Teacher Fatally Stabs Eight-Year-Old Student

A tragic incident in South Korea has left the nation in shock after a teacher fatally stabbed an eight-year-old girl at an elementary school in Daejeon.
The suspect, a female teacher in her 40s, confessed to the attack, police confirmed. The child was found with stab wounds on the second floor of the school at around 6:00 PM local time on Monday. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she did not survive. The teacher was discovered nearby with what police believe were self-inflicted wounds.
South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, has ordered a thorough investigation and called for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities revealed that the teacher had been struggling with mental health issues. She had requested a six-month leave of absence for depression in December but returned to work after just 20 days following a doctor’s approval. Reports indicate that she had experienced suicidal thoughts and displayed violent behavior in the days leading up to the attack, including an altercation with another teacher.
On the morning of the incident, education officials visited the school to investigate that prior confrontation. Later that day, the teacher purchased a weapon and brought it to school with the intent to take both her own life and a student’s. She reportedly targeted the last child to leave the school, luring the victim into a media room before carrying out the attack.
The student was initially reported missing after a bus driver alerted the school that she had not shown up for her scheduled pickup.
This heartbreaking case has raised serious concerns about mental health support for educators and school safety measures across the country.
