A devastating fuel tanker explosion claimed 18 lives in Enugu State, Nigeria, on Saturday, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The incident, which occurred on an expressway, has once again highlighted the recurring dangers posed by tanker-related accidents in the country.

The fuel-laden truck reportedly suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and crash into over a dozen vehicles. In a statement released by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, it was revealed that 10 individuals were rescued with varying degrees of injuries, while three others escaped unscathed.

“Unfortunately, the remaining 18 victims were burnt beyond recognition,” Ogungbemide confirmed, emphasizing the tragic outcome of the accident.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another fuel explosion in northern Nigeria, which left nearly 100 people dead. Such accidents have become alarmingly frequent in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer. Authorities have attributed these tragedies to poor road conditions, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and reckless driving practices.

Fuel tanker explosions often result in catastrophic loss of life and property, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter regulation of the transport sector. As families mourn their loved ones, the call for accountability and better infrastructure grows louder, with hopes that such preventable tragedies can one day become a thing of the past.
