The U.S. State Department has announced the suspension of processing passport applications requesting the gender marker “X,” restricting passport issuance to individuals identifying as male or female. This decision aligns with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday, which establishes the government’s policy to recognize only two sexes, male and female, as immutable biological classifications.

A State Department spokesperson confirmed the move, stating, “In line with that Order, the Department’s issuance of U.S. passports will reflect the individual’s biological sex as defined in the Executive Order.”

The executive order mandates all government agencies to ensure official documents: including passports, visas, and Global Entry cards, accurately display the holder’s sex.

Employee records and federal messaging will also reflect this directive. Additionally, the federal government will shift its terminology from “gender” to “sex” across documentation and communications.

On the campaign trail, Trump had vowed to push Congress to block federal funding for gender-affirming procedures, a promise echoed in the policies outlined in this latest executive order.
