China Expands University Enrollment to Boost AI and Strategic Talent Development

Several of China’s top universities have announced plans to expand their undergraduate enrollment to address “national strategic needs” and strengthen expertise in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI). This follows the government’s February announcement of a nationwide push to introduce AI courses across higher education institutions.
Leading universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, will increase their student intake starting in 2025. The expansion will focus on key areas such as AI, integrated circuits, biomedicine, healthcare, and new energy. Peking University is set to add 150 undergraduate spots, while Tsinghua University will establish a new interdisciplinary undergraduate school dedicated to AI.
China’s Ministry of Education has outlined ambitious goals to strengthen STEM education, aligning with its broader plan to become a global leader in AI and technology by 2035. The rise of homegrown AI startups, such as DeepSeek whose research team is largely composed of graduates from China’s elite universities, highlights the country’s growing talent pool in this sector.
With AI rapidly shaping global industries, China’s latest educational reforms signal a strong commitment to producing world-class talent and advancing its leadership in emerging technologies.
