Nigeria’s EFCC Hits Record with Nearly $500 Million Recovered and Over 4,000 Convictions

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reported a record-breaking year in its fight against corruption. The agency recovered almost $500 million (₦757 billion) in proceeds of crime last year, while securing more than 4,000 criminal convictions, its highest tally since it was established over two decades ago.

In its latest report, the EFCC detailed a series of significant asset seizures, which included vast quantities of petroleum products, numerous real estate properties, and various company shares. Some of the recovered funds have already been earmarked for reinvestment into government projects, a move aimed at bolstering national development and reinforcing efforts to combat corruption.

Despite these landmark achievements, challenges remain. Nigeria continues to struggle with widespread corruption, ranking 140 out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index. This persistent issue underscores the ongoing need for robust measures to strengthen accountability and transparency within the public sector.

The EFCC’s recent milestones serve as a powerful reminder of the agency’s commitment to curbing economic crimes and safeguarding public resources. As it pushes forward, stakeholders across Nigeria remain hopeful that these efforts will pave the way for a more transparent and prosperous future.
