Polish and allied military aircraft were briefly scrambled on Monday morning, as Russia launched aerial strikes on Ukraine, prompting heightened vigilance in Polish airspace, the Polish armed forces said. The Ukrainian air force issued multiple alerts early on Monday, warning that Russian drones were targeting large parts of Ukraine. In response, Poland’s Armed Forces Operation Commander ordered the activation of all available air defense assets. Fighter jets on standby were scrambled, and ground-based air defense and radar systems were raised to their highest state of readiness, according to a military statement translated from Polish by ABC News. The maneuvers were “preventative in nature,” the Polish military said, and intended to secure national airspace during the unfolding Russian attack on Ukraine. About three hours later, around 7 a.m. local time, Polish military authorities reported that the immediate threat had subsided and that Polish and allied aircraft had resumed normal operations. “We inform you that no violation of the airspace of the Republic of Poland has been observed,” the military confirmed in a follow-up statement. The brief airspace alert underscores the continued regional tensions as Russia intensifies its drone and missile assaults on Ukraine, raising the risk of spillover effects into neighboring NATO member states like Poland.

A Nigerian national, Kingsley Utulu, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for his role in a large-scale cyber fraud and identity theft scheme that defrauded the US government and private individuals of over $2.5 million. The sentence was announced on Saturday by the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, and the FBI’s New York Field Office Assistant Director in Charge, Christopher Raia. Utulu pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Clayton said Utulu and his co-conspirators hacked into US tax preparation businesses, stole personal identifying information, and used it to file fraudulent tax returns and claims. “Offshore scammers like Utulu and his co-conspirators may think they can target hard-working Americans with their hacking and fraud schemes and avoid prosecution,” Clayton said. “The message from the Department and the FBI is clear — they cannot. We are committed to protecting Americans from criminals operating offshore.” Raia also condemned the crime, saying Utulu’s actions caused significant harm. “Kingsley Utulu, a Nigerian national, was part of a scheme that targeted and infiltrated electronic systems of US-based companies to steal well over two million dollars through fraudulent tax returns,” he said. “Along with his co-conspirators, this defendant’s scheme reached across the globe to exploit sensitive information for financial gain. The FBI will never exempt any individual who seeks to unlawfully profit through deceitful practices, regardless of where they are located.” According to court documents cited by DataBreaches.net, the scheme began in 2019. Utulu and his Nigeria-based accomplices hacked US tax preparation businesses using spearphishing emails to gain access to their systems. Once inside, the conspirators stole tax and personal data from clients in New York, Texas, and other states. The stolen identities were then used to file fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service and state tax agencies. The group sought at least $8.4 million in fraudulent refunds and successfully obtained about $2.5 million. They also filed fake claims under the Small Business Administration’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan programme, securing an additional $819,000. Utulu, 38, was arrested in the United Kingdom and later extradited to the US for trial. In addition to the 63-month prison sentence, he was ordered to pay $3,683,029.39 in restitution and forfeit $290,250. His conviction adds to the growing list of Nigerians prosecuted in the US and Europe for cyber-enabled financial crimes. Earlier this year, two other Nigerians, Olutayo Ogunlaja and Abel Daramola, were convicted of running a $560,000 international romance scam and now face up to 20 years in US federal prison.

Former presidential candidate, Chief Martin Onovo, has said that no single opposition party will be able to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election without forming a strong alliance. Onovo, who ran on the platform of the now-defunct National Conscience Party (NCP) in 2015, made this assertion during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos. According to him, the only viable path to unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is through a united front of opposition parties. Onovo welcomed the current coalition efforts being led by former PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, along with other opposition figures, calling it a positive and necessary step. “I was the brain behind the largest coalition ever in the Fourth Republic, which birthed the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), and I can tell you that coalition is the only way because a united minority is stronger than a divided majority,” he said. “The coalition will win the 2027 election with 99 per cent votes if it is not self-sabotaged. Take it to the bank, it will not fail. It will succeed and defeat the ruling party convincingly if they do it well. “If the coalition is not self-sabotaged, it will be difficult for APC to return in 2027,” said Onovo, who also serves as Head of Policy Positions at the Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC). Assessing the performance of the Tinubu administration so far, Onovo said not much progress had been made in the critical areas of security and the provision of basic needs to Nigerians. He urged the President to focus the remaining years of his first term on tackling insecurity and improving living standards. Onovo further advised Tinubu to strengthen his cabinet with capable technocrats rather than political loyalists, to ensure the effective delivery of campaign promises. “The President needs to be clear about his objectives. He should be fully committed to improving the welfare and security of ordinary Nigerians in both cities and rural areas,” Onovo said. “We need competent people in positions, not loyalists. Let us get the right people, right strategies and an ethical environment, while the President provides leadership and takes responsibility. “We need the right commanders with the right strategies in security and the economy to end insecurity and suffering. We must not sacrifice performance for loyalty,” he stressed. Onovo also urged Tinubu to intensify the fight against corruption and work to reduce the growing inequality in the country, which he said fuels insecurity and social tension.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday. A local resident, Ajadi Olaleye, told The PUNCH in Ibadan that firefighters were able to rescue the man alive and subsequently handed him over to his family for proper medical attention. Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Service Reform, Adebayo Akiinwande, said the fire service was alerted through an emergency phone call around 6:10 am on Sunday. “The distress call reported that an elderly man had fallen into a well at Mobolorunduro Mosque, No. 30 Ajeigbe Street, Molefalafia, Oke-Ado, Ibadan,” Akiinwande said in a statement. The fire crew quickly launched a rescue operation, employing proper safety procedures and equipment to bring the man out safely. “The man was rescued alive and handed over to his family for further care,” he added. Akiinwande said the incident was caused by a lack of awareness regarding the dangers of entering a well without proper training or equipment. A Colombian presidential hopeful, Miguel Uribe Turbay, is in critical condition after being shot at a campaign event in Bogota on Saturday. The 39-year-old candidate was struck three times, reportedly twice in the head, by a gunman while addressing a small crowd in a park in the capital. Colombian police arrested a suspect at the scene. Uribe was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to local media reports. Uribe’s political party, Centro Democratico, condemned the attack, describing it as a grave threat to both the life of a political leader and to democracy in Colombia. Footage circulating online appears to capture the shocking moment when Uribe was shot in the head mid-speech, prompting panic among the gathered crowd. Paramedics confirmed that Uribe had been shot three times, with two bullets striking his head, according to AFP news agency. The government of left-wing President Gustavo Petro strongly denounced the attack, calling it “an act of violence not only against his person, but also against democracy.” Uribe, a prominent figure in Colombia’s political establishment, announced his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election in October. He is the son of Diana Turbay, a journalist who was killed in 1991 during a failed rescue attempt after being kidnapped by the Medellin drug cartel, which was then led by Pablo Escobar. As the country reels from the attack, concerns are mounting about the safety of political candidates and the broader implications for Colombia’s fragile democracy.

With Nigeria’s economic challenges and rising insecurity, many citizens are seeking opportunities abroad, whether for education, business, or a better quality of life. The surge in outward migration, often referred to as japa, has made visa approvals highly sought after, and visa denials deeply frustrating. For those preparing for visa interviews, understanding what visa officers look for can make all the difference between approval and rejection. Here are 10 key factors visa officers typically consider: Clear Purpose of Travel A well-defined and genuine reason for travel is crucial to a successful visa application. Whether you are traveling for studies, work, tourism, or business, you must clearly articulate your purpose and back it up with relevant documents, such as admission letters, job offers, conference invitations, or travel itineraries. A clear, credible explanation sets a strong foundation for your application. Strong Ties to Home Country Visa officers want assurance that applicants will return to their home country after their visit. Demonstrating strong ties, such as stable employment, family relationships, property ownership, or business interests,  helps convince officers of your intention to return. The stronger the ties, the better your chances of approval. Financial Stability Proof of financial capacity is a critical factor. Visa officers need to see that you can afford your stay abroad without relying on public funds. Well-documented evidence, such as bank statements, payslips, or sponsor letters, helps show that you are financially prepared for the trip. Complete and Accurate Documentation Thorough and accurate documentation is essential. Incomplete or inconsistent paperwork is one of the most common reasons for visa denials. Ensure that your passport is valid, all forms are correctly completed, and all required supporting documents are submitted in line with embassy guidelines. Honesty and Consistency Honesty is non-negotiable during the visa process. Information provided in your application must match your verbal responses during the interview. Inconsistencies, even minor ones, can lead to suspicion or outright denial. Demonstrating integrity and transparency builds trust with visa officers. Confidence and Communication Skills Your manner during the interview matters. Present yourself confidently, communicate clearly, and show that you understand the visa process and your responsibilities. Nervous or evasive behaviour can raise red flags, while preparedness signals seriousness and credibility. Risk of Overstaying or Violating Visa Terms Visa officers are alert to signs that an applicant might overstay or misuse their visa. Any history of overstaying visas, gaps in your application, or unrealistic travel plans may lead to rejection. Clearly demonstrate that you respect visa rules and intend to comply fully with the terms of your stay. Preparation for the Interview Know your visa type and anticipate possible questions. Research common interview questions and prepare your responses thoughtfully. Understanding your own application inside out helps you present a consistent and persuasive case during the interview. Bringing All Required Documents Do not overlook the importance of paperwork. Ensure you bring all required documents in an organised file, missing documents can result in delays or denials. Check the official embassy website for a checklist before your appointment. Politeness and Professionalism Your attitude counts. Being respectful, courteous, and professional during the interview reflects positively on your character. It signals to visa officers that you will respect the laws and customs of the country you intend to visit. Final Tips Always consult the official website of the embassy or consulate of your destination country for the most current guidelines and requirements. By being well-prepared and presenting a truthful, well-documented, and respectful application, you will significantly improve your chances of success.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that significant improvements in power supply are on the horizon, as the Bola Tinubu administration works to resolve long-standing structural challenges in the sector. Speaking with journalists in Ibadan on Friday, shortly after observing the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the Agodi Prayer Ground, Adelabu said the recent improvements in power supply are only the beginning of what Nigerians can expect in the coming years. “The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement. Rome wasn’t built in a day. And to build a solid structure, you need a strong foundation,” the minister said. “The power sector had serious foundational issues, which this administration has begun to address.” He emphasised that the progress seen so far is “just the tip of the iceberg,” promising major advancements in the near future. According to Adelabu, President Bola Tinubu is fully committed to lighting up the entire country. He recalled that the President reaffirmed this commitment during a recent ceremony in Port Harcourt, where a new power plant was inaugurated. “President Tinubu’s key objective is to electrify every Nigerian home, business, institution, and industry. We are not relenting,” the minister said. Adelabu noted that although he only assumed office in September 2023, visible progress has already been made. “This is just one and a half years into the administration, and you’ve seen some improvement. I promise that within the next year, you will witness major changes that will revive industries, support small and cottage businesses, and bring light and happiness back to Nigerian homes,” he said. The minister’s remarks come amid renewed government efforts to tackle Nigeria’s chronic power supply challenges, which have long hampered economic growth and quality of life across the country.
