Global Leaders Relieved as U.S.-Led Economic Order Holds Firm

At the 2025 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in Washington, global policymakers expressed cautious relief that the U.S.-centric economic system, which has dominated for the past 80 years, remains intact — for now.

Concerns had been mounting over President Donald Trump’s inward-looking economic policies, which critics feared could weaken America’s leadership in global finance. However, reassurances from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who emphasized reform rather than abandonment of institutions like the IMF and World Bank, offered a measure of stability.

Despite this, uncertainty lingers. President Trump’s aggressive trade policies, including widespread tariffs and sharp criticism of global economic organizations, have dampened confidence. The IMF recently downgraded its global growth forecast, while European economies are adjusting expectations amid trade disruptions impacting manufacturing and consumer spending.

While the U.S. dollar continues to dominate international trade, largely because there are no strong alternatives. Experts warn that a major withdrawal of U.S. support for international financial institutions could trigger widespread economic instability.

For now, the international financial system remains steady, but policymakers remain wary about the long-term outlook for global economic cooperation.
