Indian Researcher at Georgetown University Detained by U.S. Authorities, Faces Deportation

U.S. immigration authorities have detained an Indian national studying at Georgetown University and are seeking his deportation over concerns that he poses a threat to U.S. foreign policy. The detained individual, Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at the university, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Arlington, Virginia.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Suri is accused of disseminating content supporting Hamas and engaging in activities deemed harmful to U.S. interests. His student visa has been revoked, and he is currently being held in a Louisiana detention facility while awaiting immigration proceedings.

Suri, who specializes in peace and conflict studies, has been associated with Georgetown’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. His work has focused on issues related to majoritarianism and minority rights in South Asia.

Legal representatives for Suri argue that his detention is politically motivated, particularly due to his advocacy for Palestinian rights. They also claim that the government has not provided substantial evidence to support the allegations.

Georgetown University has acknowledged the situation, stating that it was unaware of any unlawful activity by Suri and emphasizing the importance of due process.

This case is part of a broader crackdown by U.S. immigration officials on individuals linked to pro-Palestinian activism. Recently, another academic at Columbia University, who holds a green card, was similarly detained under accusations of posing a security risk.

Suri’s legal team is challenging his detention and seeking his release, arguing that his First Amendment rights and academic freedom are being threatened. The outcome of his case could set a significant precedent for international scholars and researchers in the U.S.
