South Korea and China Agree to Strengthen Trade Ties Amid Global Uncertainties

In a significant show of economic diplomacy, South Korea’s Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun and China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met in Seoul on Saturday to discuss the rapidly changing global trade environment. The meeting, their first since November 2023, centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation and collaborating in multinational trade forums.
The ministers emphasized the need to work together within key international platforms such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), as both nations face mounting global economic challenges. They also discussed joint efforts to bolster supply chain resilience, particularly for critical minerals vital to high-tech industries like semiconductors and batteries.
The dialogue comes at a time when regional economic stability is under pressure from external trade measures, including recent U.S. tariff implementations affecting exports from both South Korea and China. Both ministers expressed their commitment to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring that their nations remain competitive in the global market.
Looking ahead, the two countries pledged to support one another in upcoming trade summits, including the APEC meetings. South Korea is hosting this year’s summit, with China set to host in 2026. This joint initiative underscores their mutual dedication to fostering international economic collaboration and addressing common trade challenges.
The meeting is expected to pave the way for more structured dialogue between the two nations, reinforcing their shared interest in sustaining a robust and resilient global trade network.
