U.S. Court Awards Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 Million in Defamation Case Against Kennedy Agyapong

A U.S. court has ruled in favor of Ghanaian investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, awarding him $18 million in damages after finding that former Ghanaian lawmaker, Kennedy Agyapong, defamed him.

The verdict, delivered by the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey, concluded that Agyapong made false and damaging claims about Anas following the release of the BBC documentary Betraying the Game in 2018. Among the accusations, Agyapong alleged that Anas was involved in criminal activities, including the murder of his investigative partner, Ahmed Suale, and the deaths of several Chinese nationals. He also accused Anas of corruption and labeled him a fraud.

This ruling comes in contrast to a 2023 decision by a Ghanaian court, which dismissed a similar defamation case filed by Anas against Agyapong. At the time, the Ghanaian High Court ruled that Anas’ style of investigative journalism resembled “investigative terrorism” rather than ethical reporting.

Following the U.S. court’s decision, Anas welcomed the ruling, describing it as a major victory for press freedom and a step toward holding public figures accountable for misinformation. He emphasized that the outcome reaffirms the importance of investigative journalism in promoting democracy and justice.

The case highlights the ongoing tensions between investigative journalists and powerful political figures in Ghana, as well as the broader implications of defamation in the media landscape.
